Cohesion funds are having an instrumental role when it comes to helping European regions build a brighter future for themselves. The Canary Islands are no strangers to them; the 630 million euros have allowed our region to host important facilities that help our development as well as to host one of the most important centres for space research in Europe. Overall, they are a great way of promoting European integration, by fostering economic development, especially in areas such as the Outermost Regions that face particular challenges due to their situation.
EU’s outermost regions are close to the heart of cohesion policy. Together with my colleague MEPs, we negotiated special conditions of the cohesion financing for the outermost regions - 2bn euro via the Interreg programme as well as 85% European co-financing rate . The EU is only strong when its regions are strong, regardless if it is the inland or the islands.
Background
The EPP Cohesion Mission to Tenerife is symbolic because it underlines the fact that EU’s outermost regions are in the focus of the EPP Group. The 2021-2027 cohesion policy offers special funding conditions to the outermost regions. For example, we now have almost 2 billion euro of assigned Interreg funding to those regions. We also have 85% of EU co-financing for the outermost regions.
Tenerife is among the territories of the outermost regions. Our EPP Cohesion Mission aims to show success stories and to underline their local impact on people and the economy. For example, cohesion policy in Tenerife invests 64 million euro in sanitation and purification along water delivery networks. The EU is also investing 7.4 million euro in hospital infrastructure on the island.
We also discuss implementation challenges and the future of cohesion with representatives of the local authorities and beneficiaries.
